The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
