Watkins Holds the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin Could Still Make the World Cup

Only one goal in his opening ten top-flight appearances this campaign had many questioning if Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were behind him.

Yet, a only four weeks later, he stands as the most discussed striker in England following bagging seven goals in 6 back-to-back games.

His most recent finish, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, took his season's haul to eight, seeing him become the leading English scorer in the Premier League this term.

A Remarkable Return to Form

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, following a nine-year spell with Everton that was marred by fitness issues in its final stages.

Yet, the numbers supporting his comeback in Daniel Farke's new counter-attacking 3-5-2 formation are extremely notable.

His six-match scoring sequence puts him in prestigious company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League fixtures.

To provide context, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run lasting this many games - his best remains two separate five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to better Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who embarked on an eight-game scoring streak for Leicester City in 2019.

What's Behind the Purple Patch?

Why has Calvert-Lewin so tough to stop in the past month? A previous opponent's manager explained it aptly.

"He has the ideal timing," the manager said. "He's smart and a excellent striker and he found the timing to arrive exactly when needed."

That natural ability and timing inside the box was what turned him into a beloved player at his previous club.

Experts highlight the formation change to a 3-5-2 as a major factor, allowing a greater number of players to enter the box and occupy defenders, thus given the striker additional space.

"He is a classic centre-forward," noted a former professional. "For the goal... it was a neat little flick beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."

"I've endured a lot since then. Lots of ups and lots of downs. A challenge of resolve and I've persevered and kept going... I've had faith and this is the result."

His manager has voiced complete confidence at this rich vein of form, reiterating that the player is "a top strikers" in the division.

International Question

Calvert-Lewin's return to form has predictably ignited discussions of an England recall.

The ex- Sheffield United player has 11 England appearances, netting four goals, but has not represented the Three Lions since the last European Championship.

Observers think the striker will be in the mix for the World Cup squad if he can maintain this form.

"He looks as sharp as he has in a while," one remarked. "If he maintains this level of form... then he's going to be in a conversation for a World Cup place."

Intense Rivalry

However, competition for places behind Harry Kane is intense.

Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, following a decisive double versus Chelsea, is currently considered to be leading in the hierarchy, according to some analysis.

"If you contrast the two players, Watkins has the edge in terms of using his pace to test teams," it was noted.
