Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
