“As long as these practices remain in effect, every Palestinian in confinement faces risk, including the physically well individuals, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in detention have been publicly known, including a middle-aged hospital director who died in confinement after four months in custody.

A detainee held with the deceased stated that he was taken to the exercise area by guards immediately preceding his demise, clearly wounded and naked from the hips downward. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Detention administrators and military provided researchers with the number of casualties in confinement, and minimal additional information such as the facility where they died, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mainly people from Gaza, researchers were not able to connect the limited information provided by officials to a death documented by advocacy bodies, by means of testimony from released detainees or accounts in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin may not know about their family members’ fatalities as well, as Israel has created obstacles to track Palestinian individuals it is holding.
