This Satirical Thriller
Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of ageing. Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to hosting a workout series on TV. Pushed out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and terrifying procedure called "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in a progressively toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit thriller features Keira Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from covering world issues to embark on an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, plus additional filthy rich individuals. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship one night and everyone denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Streaming currently, Netflix
Presence Film
The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities in this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame through this autobiographical spoof. He plays an egotistical celebrity playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the children anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress succeeds to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4
Black Bag
This week's another release from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as precise as the polo necks sported by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission to identify a double agent within their ranks out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
