Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were no match even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
